Austen is a certified arborist in Wilmington-Whiteface, in the
Adirondacks High Peaks Region, and the owner of Tri-Lakes Tree and
Landscape. While I do most of the tree surgery at the Refuge, usually
involving dead white pines fallen across the Refuge trail, I won't
touch any tree that threatens power lines, or the two houses on refuge
property, Ausable Lodge and Otter Chalet. In such cases, I call
Darrell, a professional who combines a gibbon's climbing skills with
the ability to wield the chain saw, while far above the ground and
strapped to the fated tree's trunk. Darrell spotted this black bear
near his home in Wilmington, and when he approached for a better look,
the bear scurried up this white pine, thinking he'd left humanity far
below. Darrell ran back to the house for his camera, and promptly
scaled the tree next to the bear's tree, and the result is this photo.
The photos at the bottom of the page show Darrell at work, and help
explain why the above
photos were all in a day's work. |

| Kevin and Deb McKenzie live deep in the woods west of Springfield Road, and attract all kinds of critters to their bird haven. The bears above are frequent visitors, and not above looking in the window to satisfy their curiosity. Both Kevin and Deb are excellent photographers whose work appears throughout the AdirondackWildlife.org web site. Kevin is an accomplished 46er, known as "MudRat", who specializes in scaling Adirondack High peaks via slides. |
